Baise*Moi
I still believe the real service the Sewer provides is ‘watching these movies so You don’t have to.’
Case in point: Baise Moi, with its can’t-fail concept of two hot French chicks going on a hardcore sex and violence spree, actually disappoints while it offends. Who could’ve thought rape-murders could be disturbing and sophomoric at the same time?
Nadine (Karen Lancaume) and Manu (Raffaela Anderson) are female Frenchies of some low station; one’s an annoying psychotic petty-thief and the other is an annoying psychotic pot-head. Aimless, destructive lifestyles lead naturally to simultaneous accidental homicides – crimes of passion, if you will – a chance meeting between the two, and whole-hearted delving into a real rough weekend.
Now before any of you get all huffy wondering how I or anyone could even watch this movie about anal rape and execution by handgun, (among other laughs) let me say this: “Sex and Violence, it’s what we do best!”
Again you ask about the sex and violence. Is it good, XXX, Realistic or gratuitous, does it advance the plot or is it the raison d’etre? Reasonable, reasonable questions. Let’s say verisimilitude ain’t the Baise*Moi strong point, in tone or in what’s shown. But you do get to see weenies sliding in and out of stuff, if that’s what you’re after.
Is it just me or is Baise*Moi the poster-child for juvenile rape-revenge fantasies with slim justification for the boobs and boners, and even slimmer for the message: any slightly skeevy male deserves to be entrapped, sexually tortured and killed.
It’s sad because this cynical cash-in on the Gaspar Noe legacy (two obvious nods are made his way) cheapens the meta-text that humans frequently enjoy going ape-shit on each other for no reason, while botching the potential revitalization of thinking-persons porn.
Lancaume and Anderson seem to almost snicker through their thin roles while going on a bafflingly-intense and totally groundless orgy of fornication and execution. And it only sounds like a parody; if that’s the intent someone messed up good.
There you go. Baise*Moi is a thorough-going avoider. Er, it sucks. Check out Irreversible for a better handling (nyuk) of this material.
